For a birdwatcher who has cut her teeth in the Northeast, reading Robert Winkler's Going Wild: Adventures with Birds in the Suburban Wilderness is like listening to a favorite radio station. Oh, yes, I know this one. Great song. Winkler's haunts are familiar to me: coastal New England. So are the birds he describes, both afield and in his backyard. We've even seen a few of the same rarities. In energetic prose, he describes adventures both big and small: discovering a sandhill crane "standing as tall as a teenager" in a small salt pond; being pinned almost to the ground by the strafing attack of a nesting pair of northern goshawks.
